About the Grand Egyptian Museum

The idea behind the establishment of the Grand Egyptian Museum emerged in 2002. A distinctive location, near the Giza Pyramids, was identified to construct the museum. The foundation stones were set by the Egyptian government and the UNESCO. The International Union of Architects announced a global competition to choose the best design and the winner was the Irish design house; Heneghan Peng Architects.

The design depended on the fact that the sun coming from above the three pyramids form the museum in its unique and impressive design. The construction works started in 2006 after relocating the famous Statue of Ramses II, from downtown Cairo to the location of the Egyptian Grand Museum. Afterwards, the largest center for the restoration of antiquities, inaugurated in 2010.

The construction works of the Grand Egyptian Museum were completed and finalized in 2021. The museum today hosts several halls and serves as an international cultural and entertainment hub. Today, the Grand Egyptian Museum is considered the largest all over the world.

 

The most important displays of the Grand Egyptian Museum include the golden collection of Tut Ankh Amun which was transferred from the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities to the museum.
