About Hurghada

The city of Hurghada is considered the capital of the Governorate of the Red Sea in Egypt and the biggest touristic hub in this area of the land of the Nile. Nicknamed as the jewel of the Red Sea, Hurghada hosts more than 500 resorts, hotels, and smaller motels and hostels. All these establishments serve the needs of various tourists coming from all over the world to visit Egypt.

The history of Hurghada

More than 100 years ago, Hurghada was nothing but a small town where its residents mainly depended on fishing as their means of living. Before this period at the beginning of the 20th century, Hurghada was the meeting point of Arab fishermen coming from the Arabian Peninsula and the called it Ghardak, referring to a tree that used to appear at the city at this time of history. Ghardak afterwards transformed to be Ghardaka or Hurghada.

In fact, the very first resort which was built in Hurghada was constructed by King Farouk, former ruler of Egypt. Afterwards, when Egypt witnessed the nationalization program by president Gamal Abdel El Nasser, this resort became the club belonging to the Egyptian army.

It was around 45 years ago when the Egyptian government started developing Hurghada to become one of the renowned touristic destinations in Egypt. They built various roads, infrastructure, and some hotels. Afterwards, international hotels and resorts from all over the globe started operating in Hurghada which became the glittering star of the Red Sea in Egypt.

The Geographical Location of Hurghada

Overlooking the Red Sea, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is located to the East of Hurghada. To the North of Hurghada, around 140 kilometers, there is the small town of Ras Ghareb and to the South, there is Safaga, with its international port, around 60 kilometers away. Hurghada is in fact located 471 kilometers to the South East of Cairo. This is why several tourists who visit Egypt prefer to visit it by airplanes.
