The history of Luxor

Historical records noted that the area of Luxor was inhabited as early as the presynaptic period due to the fertile lands around the Nile River. However, the turning point of the history of Luxor occurred more than 4500 years ago when the Pharaohs of the 4th dynasty made Luxor the capital of Upper Egypt.

The flourishing era of Luxor started when Pharaonic King Amhotep 1 declared Luxor or Thebes as the capital of Egypt after he defeated invaders and made the city the capital of unified Egypt. This was the true beginning of the period of the New Kingdom.

This period between the 15th and the 10th centuries BC has witnessed remarkable achievements in Luxor including the establishment of the famous Karnak complex of temples for the worship of the king of gods, Amun. Afterwards, several architectural projects were completed including the Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, and the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut.
